As characters enter into the story, use this to post sketches of them and to help you keep them straight. When you write a character sketch, you are trying to introduce the reader to someone. You want the reader to have a strong mental image of the person, to know how the person talks, to know the person's characteristic ways of doing things, to know something about the person's value system.
Gully Foyle - is a very average man with nothing special about him, He has no eduactation no skills. In the boook it seems to describe him as African american.-John Benton
He seems way to strange, just because there is nothing to him. But it is too early in the novel to tell. Michael Maher
He seems like he is on the verge of going crazy, it starts out describing him as a man in space being tortured and just missing his old life. -Cory Burchfield
i agree with cory. everything about him i read makes me think he's going insane. which i guess he has good reasons. but basically i think he is just messed up from being there like cory said. - Haley Kline
He is just a man who wants to know what is happening and wants to know what is going on with Vorga. - Jess Koch
In the book it says he is a black creature with a beard, crusted with dried blood and has patient eyes.- ALEX GEESEY
I am pretty sure he is not black, but in the begining of the book in prologue he is described as big boned and rough. he is also slow and lazy. He is said to have physical strenth and intellectual potention stunted by lack of ambition. this kind of shows that he can be more than just a common man but he just doesn't try. He is supposedly 30 years old. Later on however do to his space issue he loses weight and becomes somewhat more athletic. -Keira Richardson
Response: I think that Gully Foyle does have some education history and skills. He can fix an entire ship engine and make it work. I think people would need some skill and education to fix an engine. Also I don't think that Gully is not just an ordinary man. I think that it is a little strange that after 170 days he doesn't decide to fix the engine until another ship passes him by without saving him.
- Catherine Averill
Another Response: If the author portrays him to have no education, how can he fix an engine, get himself saved, and he's jaunting farther than any person mentioned in the story. -Nick Kratzer
Response: I agree with Nick completely. There is no way that Gully Foyle could have done all of those things without an education. Obviously he is a smart man but he just doesnt want to use it all of the time. -Ashlee Carson
Response: I agree with Cathrine, he never decided to fix the ship until another one passed him. I think he fixes it because it gives him a reason to live. He is determined to get revenge on the Vorga for leaving him. - Caden Terchanik
Response- i agree with Caden, during Gullys in space stay, he had no ambition to try and do any thing but to live. it seemed like he had no hope until Vorga passed and left him there. now that gave him a spark of something to get him moving and get back at the Vorga for leaving him to die.--Dominic Spinazzola
Response- I partly agree with catherine, but a man doesnt always need to have some education to fix an education. Some people are just good at fixing engines.-Alex Geesey
In my opinion, I believe Gully Foyle is not uneducated or as dumb as people seem to think. Gully Foyle has just been on the ship too long by himself. He does seem to be a bit crazy and have some grammar and speech errors, but this does not necessarily mean he is uneducated. I mean after Vorga passed him by he read all the manuals and handbooks so that he could fix the ship. He even understood them. So Gully Foyle is actually somewhat educated. - Danielle Heininger
Captain Peter Y'ang Yeovil - head of Central Intelligence. He is a descendant of the Chinese herritage. The Central Intelligence is similar to our CIA. The Central Intelligence is in charge of the law enforcement of all the Inner Planets. They are also in charge of gathering information on the IP's. -Nicole Crossman
Saul Dagenham - He tried to trick Gully Foyle into giving Saul answers about Nomad but it wouldnt work with Foyle. -Ashlee Carson
A: I would also like to add that, he is radioactive. He use to be a scientist, but there was an experiment that went all wrong. He also cant spend more than five minutes with anyone or they might become radioactive as well. -Kyle Waite
Response: I agree with Kyle in that the raidioactivity is an important thing to know about him. however i disagree with the fact of another person becoming radioactive , I believe that since he has killed a flower with the heat he gives off that a person will not become radioactive but burn in some way. Just making someone else raidio actice does not seem severe enopugh for the other threts in this book-Keira Richardson
He reminds me of a person who has everything he could ever want but somehow wants something else. He knows what he wants and he knows how to get it, but he wants to have fun while retrieving it. It's kind of like Austin Powers and Dr. Evil to me. They fight tooth and nail against each other but in the end they work together, just for somebody else to ruin it. I like using movies to compare things. -Nick Kratzer
Presteign of Presteign - He seems to be one of those guys who thinks he is better than the rest of society, which is shown by how he calls himself "Presteign," and refuses to go by Mr. Presteign. He seems overly-ambitious and he is a very cunning man who will do whatever needs done. - Christian Graham
He resembles the upper classman in our society with a lot of money and power. He's very formal and doesn't mess around and he's always down to business. -Justin Campbell
Regis Sheffield - He is the lawyer that Presteign hires to make a case against Gully Foyle if he does not cooperate in telling them where the Nomad is. He acts like a snob when he is in contact with Presteign, so it makes me think that he just wishes to get approval of everyone. *Kayle Giarth*
Jisabella McQueen - she is very hot-tempered and very intelligent. She is serving 5 years of cure in Gouggre Martel for larceny. She is a thief and a criminal. She is a close friend, acquaintence and lover of Gully Foyle's. Amazingly, it seems her metamorphosis is very much the same and as sensational as Gully's. -Nicole Crossman
Response- i feel that right now in the book, she is Gullys lover and close friend, but the more the book goes on, she might turn on him- Erica Keim
Response: I believe right now she might be using Gully to her own advantage on finding a way out of the jail, since they both can hear eachother. later on i belive she might turn on him once she realizes his face is a symbol of the man inside him that he has to control _keira Richardson
Response: I agree with Nicole about Jisabella i just wanted to add that she loves to joke around with Gully and also make him think more with his mind and to control himself rather than exploding stuff.-Skipper
Robin Wednesbury - She is tall, an African-American, nice, brilliant, and cultivating woman despite her handicappedness of one-way telepath. She would conduct tours for jaunting and treat adults like children on those guides. She was a good teacher and great jaunting instructor. -Joel Redfoot
Response: I agree with Joel, I dont understand what you mean by "treats adults like children" I dont see that -Cory Burchfield
Response: I also agree with Joel. She is brilliant and a wonderful teacher. Her students seem to like her very much. She's also great at reteaching them how to jaunt. I think what Joel and the author mean by "she treats them like children" is that she is very good at explaining things to them in simple terms they may understand more easily. I think that because as it states in the book, most of her students are war patients that have had head injuries and have lost the ability to jaunt. She also teaches them in steps, not just one big lesson, but small, easy to remember steps. - Danielle Heininger
Re: I agree with joel as well, but it seems like she is always sorry if she transmits her thoughts to someone else, cause it seemed like she did it on accident once -MIchael Maher
Robin Wednesbury - She is an african american one-way telepath, which is a telepathic person who can only transmit her thoughts to others so they can hear, but she can't hear anyone else's thoughts. She teaches a class of of jaunte's including Gully. She takes her classes to different places by jaunting, teaching them L.E.S., Location, Elevation, and Situation. - Sasha Cochran
She is a black teacher who can Jaunt a full class to different places, and she can read peoples thoughts.
Dr. Harley Baker - A friend of Jisabella McQueen; he offers to remove the pigment from Gully's face. Dr. Baker will do anything for anyone and is very passionate about what he does. He accepts the challenge to remove the pigment, but for a small fortune. She was very bitter at first to pay the fee. She didn't realize what a whimsical individual Gully was, but is determined to pay her debts. -Nicole Crossman
Baker: he is just not a scientist he owns something called a freak factory.. he collects many different things and though he is willing to do the opperation he would rather have gully for his collection. this man can be trusted by jis and jiz alone because they have somewhat of a thing going on. however gully needs to be on his toes about him expecially since jiz may tuern on gully at any moment because of his lack of control. His fr5eak museam according to page 95 also has people in it with birth defects or something wrong with them. he likes to call them monsters which shows he has no respect at all for people.- keira richardson
Geoffrey Fourmyle: Aname of which Foyle uses to hide himself amongst the world. He is a very wealthy man and has something called a four mile circus. this is because the sound of the circus can be heard four miles away. He is a dumb man wth a much lack of intelligence and has most people write his speeches for him.Though this yet another mask of Foyles he learns how to control his anger and learns how to keep himself under control as to not be seen as Gully. he studies yoga to keep himself relaxed and is a very somewhat cultured man who has been almost to every country in the world.-Keira Richardson
Geoffrey Fourmyle of Ceres: Keira pretty much covered him pretty well. He is considered a buffoon from the largest of the asteroids. They also say he is very funny. He has many people working him all the time and doing the dirty work. He likes to be lifted off the ground. He seems to have much control of
everything. He seems to want everything very grand. A helicopter drifted down as a cascade of furnishings, servants, valets, chefs, and waiters jaunted down. They all got quickly to work and. Geoffrey even has his own private police. The rest of his entourage arrived by bus, car, truck, bike, and by jaunting. As you can see, he does everything on a very grand
scale. -Nicole Crossman
Response- I agree with Erica Keim. Although while Gully and Jiz are in prison they are very affectionate towards each other and seem to be falling in love, when they are getting Gullys face cleaned of the tattoo she says no for anesthesia and makes him suffer. Then when they are in Dr. Bakers weekender, they make love and are happy again. Anything is possible throughout this book, im still not sure if Jiz will turn on Gully or not.
-Sasha Cochran
Ben Forrest - leading spaceman. Ben was aboard Vorga T: 1339 on September 15, 2436. This was the same day Gully was aboard the Nomad. It was this day that Vorga T: 1339 flew past Gully without offering help. When Gully finally meets Ben Forrest, Gully tries to get all the information out of him as he can, but he won't speak. Gully then tries to bribe him with money. All he gets as a response is 'Kemp' and then there is no more responses. Gully had successfully killed Ben. All he had now was a name and the fact that there were 12 people on Vorga T: 1339, but doesn't know any more. -Nicole Crossman
response: I agree with Nicole on the defination of Ben Forrest. I don't really understand why Ben was a drugs whenever they found him? I think that Gully may have lost too much control when he was killing Ben. I think that he is too caught up in his revenge on Vorga T:1339 and he needs to try more to keep control of his revenge. - Catherine Averill
Kempsey - He was a bacteria miner and on the crew of Vorga. When he is introduced, he seems to be having some sort of meltdown about clothes. We later find out that the Vorga was 'scuttling' refugees and their dirty clothes were everywhere, leaving an emotional and mental imprint in his brain. Gully finds a way to bypass the Sympathetic Block put into Kempsey to prevent him from talking about Vorga and finds out who gave the order to strand Gully. Kempsey later dies from lack of blood during a ship take off. -Jess Filegar
Presteign- a stereotypical ruthless businessman who has no conception for anyone other than his daughter and who is extremely manipulative. -*Aaron Gromiller*
Will and Idea - we don't get a whole lot of information on them, but we do get some understanding of who they are and what they are about. Through Will and Idea, PryE can only be exploded by psychokinesis. Who's energy can only be released by thought. In order to explode, it must be willed. Also, the thought must be directed at it. There is no formula for it, just thought. Psychokenis: the purported ability to move or deform inanimate objects, as metal spoons, through mental processes. -Nicole Crossman
Sigurd Magsman - An telepath who has the body of an incredibly aged infant. He has very childish characteristics, for being so old. He whines and crys just like any baby would, just telepathically. Sigurd also seems to be very sensitive to people who are tormented on the inside, because when he goes inside a Skoptsy he whines and says that she hurts him. He is a very interesting character. -Jess Filegar
Gully Foyle - A very well sized, strong man both physically and mentally with a personality to flexible that whatever he sets his mind to, he's bound to reach it's destination. Throughout the story we learn that he is just a very average man with one thing in mind and that is to make the idea clear that no one is any different than another and people should not fight over silly situations. -Cullen Schimminger
